Radio station strikes deal to cover half of NASCAR races

CONCORD - Major news for racing fans who love to hear how their favorite drivers are doing on the track - while on the road.  A new deal struck this morning, will bring a portion of races back to Charlotte's radio airwaves.

Tuesday morning during the John Boy and Billy radio show at the WRFX (99.7 The Fox) studios in Charlotte, Marcus Smith joined Performance Racing Network President Doug Rice in announcing the new deal.

According to Rice and Smith, WRFX will broadcast all 13 PRN races on the radio, starting this weekend at the Cobalt Tools 400 race in Las Vegas.  PRN is based out of Concord.

The announcement is big news for people in Charlotte, after WSOC FM 103 announced that it wouldn't carry NASCAR races this season, for the first time in years.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV) - You've heard the old saying about "the bright lights of the big city," Charlotte and the surrounding area have plenty of them. Some a lot brighter than others.

And that's why See, Click, Fix got involved in this latest issue.

If you've driven around Charlotte it's hard to miss those electronic billboard signs, especially if you're driving at night!

Hardly a distraction during the day, but it's a different story when the sun goes down.

There's a sign at exit 23 on I-77 Northbound in Huntersville, and one viewer says he was literally "blinded by the light"!

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Business is good when the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) is in town, but businesses worry when the popular basketball tournament packs up and leaves.

The Chicken Box Cafe serves about 1200 meals a day when the tourney is here. After the tournament is gone, the restaurant goes to serving about 500 meals a day.  

"It brings in more revenue," Chicken Box Cafe Spokesperson Barbara Massey said.  "And word of mouth is also a good thing."

Businesses now want the city to step up a do a better job to support small businesses and keep the cash flow coming to their cash registers.  Here's what they want to see happen.

Highwinds and hail raked across the foothills and the Piedmont as a line of thunderstorms moved through the area.

Statesville had large hail and trees downed.

In the foothills, sheds were knocked off their footings and trees were toppled onto homes.

Tornado watch issued as storms expected in Charlotte region

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Much of the Charlotte region is under a tornado watch as a line of storms in the Midwest moving our way is expected to bring with it potentially threatening conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, a cold front will approach from the west today and will sweep across western North Carolina this evening.

Around 1:30 p.m., a tornado watch was issued for 11 NC counties just west of Mecklenburg County in the WBTV viewing area. That tornado watch, which is in effect until 8 p.m., joins various wind advisories and warnings in the area.

CORNELIUS - Comedy fans will have the opportunity to laugh with an all-time legend in an intimate setting when the one-and-only Gallagher takes the stage at Lake Norman Comedy Zone on Tuesday night, March 8 at 7 p.m.

Gallagher became a household name in the 1980s smashing produce and other items with his trademark “Sledge-O-Matic.”

A pioneer in prop comedy, Gallagher has written and starred in over a dozen television specials, which were heavily aired on both Showtime and Comedy Central in the 1980s and 1990s. Gallagher made headlines again in 2003 when he ran as an independent in the California gubernatorial recall election, which was won by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
