‘Get your green on' at the Great America Cleanup

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - Everybody gets the itch to do a little spring cleaning around the house when the weather warms up. Why not take it a step further and do your part to do some tidying up in our community?

Keep Mecklenburg Beautifulis part of Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program that takes place annually from March 1 through May 31, involving an estimated 3 million volunteers and attendees.

Last year, hardworking volunteers donated more than 5.7 million hours to clean, beautify and improve more than 33,000 communities during more than 30,000 events in all 50 states and beyond.

Lake Norman leaders discuss I-77 widening

LAKE NORMAN (Justin Vick, Mooresville Weekly) - The Lake Norman Transportation Commission spent much of its Feb. 10 meeting discussing the bombshell state transportation engineer Barry Moose had dropped a week prior.

Moose told the Mecklenburg-Union Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Technical Coordinating Committee that efforts to widen Interstate 77 to Exit 28 and add high-occupancy toll lanes, known as HOT lanes, could be accelerated if transportation officials transfer money from stalled state projects.

Iredell Health System to host National Day of Dance

IREDELL COUNTY (The Mooresville Weekly) - Iredell Health System will give free screenings, health seminars and dance demonstrations during the national Day of Dance for Heart Health from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 26 at South Iredell High School.

General admission is free.

Mooresville Mayor at center of controversy over emails to alleged mistress

MOORESVILLE, NC (WBTV) - The Mooresville Board of Commissioners are considering whether or not to ask Mooresville Mayor Chris Montgomery to resign amidst allegations of emails to an alleged mistress.

Montgomery used his work email address to send the emails. WBTV obtained the emails through a public records request.

In one email dated December 4th 2010,  Montgomery writes to a woman who is not his wife and says, "I love you and promise we will be together without hurting anyone."

The woman writes back, "email is making me nervous".

Huntersville man arrested for home break-ins

IREDELL COUNTY - Detectives arrested a Huntersville man they say is responsible for several Iredell County break-ins early Thursday morning.

Iredell County Sheriff’s detectives began investigating on Wednesday after receiving reports of house break-ins.  Detectives discovered that much of the stolen property, including guns, jewelry and tools, was being sold at a local pawn shop.

They were then able to trace the robberies to the suspect, 49-year-old Lloyd Lawrence Outlaw.

Discovery Place earns spot as top-ranked museum in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE – Discovery Place, Inc. was ranked as the most visited museum and historic attraction in the Charlotte region and seventh overall in North Carolina, according to an annual survey released by Carolina Publishing Associates.

Visited by 530,423 guests in 2010, Discovery Place Inc.'s attendance included visitation to Discovery Place, Charlotte Nature Museum and Discovery Place KIDS-Huntersville, which opened in October 2010.

The Top 30 North Carolina museums and historic attractions survey is conducted each year by Carolina Publishing Associates of Matthews, publishers of the annual Carolina Heritage Guide, Carolina Field Trips Magazine, The African American Heritage and Visitor's Guide and the Carolina Sports Travel Guide.

Checkers launch Facebook initiative to raise money for sick superfan

CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte Checkers today announced “Facebook Fandemonium 2,” an online fundraising initiative with the goal of raising $25,000 for Zach Bennett and his family.

For every new ‘like’ the Checkers get on their Facebook fan page, the team will donate $2 to the Bennetts, up to $25,000, as they continue to gather the resources needed to move to Charlotte.

Zach is a 10-year-old boy from Albany, N.Y. who suffers from neurofibromatosis (NF1). As former season ticket holders of the Albany River Rats, the Bennett family has established close relationships with many current Checkers players and is looking to relocate to the Queen City for better medical care.
