On The Road: Carolina Renaissance Festival

By Liz Horton - bio l email

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - This week I traveled to Huntersville for the 16th annual Carolina Renaissance Festival. "You've heard about it. You're hearing about it. People talk about it all the time. Come out and see what everyone's talking about!" Marketing director Matt Siegel showed me around the 22 acre property. I immediately felt as if I was stepping into the pages of a fairy tale.

"There is a little bit of history and a touch of fantasy. We have fairies, magicians, fantasy characters," said Siegel.

It's hard to miss all of the colorful costumes and entertaining performers around. Music, rides, and games appeal to visitors of all ages.

High School students and friends run to fight cancer

CONCORD - Two Huntersville teenagers had an idea to help fight cancer and decided to run with it. Stephanie Schauder and Tim Gruber will join friends and supporters Nov. 12 in running 12 miles from Presbyterian Hospital in Huntersville to Cannon School in Concord, where both are students, to raise $12,000 for Relay for Life of Mooresville/Lake Norman.

Stephanie has supported Relay for Life since her father was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer two years ago. Her father passed away last January.

"During this difficult time, I began to see how many people were affected by this disease," said Stephanie. "I knew I needed to do something to help other cancer patients and their families."

Voter Guide: Mecklenburg County Commission At-Large

By Tom Roussey - bio l email

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - It's no exaggeration to say this year features one of the most important, most competitive races for Mecklenburg County commission in memory.

After a budget year that saw big cuts to things like parks and libraries after county revenues plummeted, many voters are seeing more than ever how much decisions by the county commission can affect them.

Republicans have not won a majority on the commission since 2002, but this year they feel they have a great shot at taking it back.

It is likely that whichever party can win two out of the three at-large spots will have control of the commission.
