The Highway Patrol completed its Operation "Road Watch" campaign after a two-day intensive enforcement effort on I-85 in Cleveland and surrounding counties. 

During the two-day event, which began on Tuesday, May 14, and ended on Wednesday, May 15, Troopers concentrated on commercial motor vehicle violations as well as focused their attention on motorists who were driving aggressively around big trucks, speeding, tailgating, and driving aggressively.

Established in 2007, Operation "Road Watch" was designed to improve commercial motor vehicle safety as well as the efficiency of commercial vehicle operations.

Man arrested for not doing work he was paid for, deputies say

A man was arrested in Iredell County after being paid for work that he didn’t complete, according to a report from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

On April 2, deputies received a report in reference to failing to complete work after being paid.  The case was assigned to a detective with the Economic Crimes Unit to be investigated.

The victim reported to the Sheriff’s Office that she paid Shawn Kaiser, 41, of Mooresville, to install yard lighting at her home and that he did not do the work as agreed upon.

The victim stated that she had written Kaiser personal checks on March 7 and 8, and found that they had been cashed on the days they were written, for a total of $1,050, deputies said.

Kaiser told the victim that the work would be completed on March 15.

Detectives arrested Kaiser on April 11, and charged him with failing to complete work after being paid.

 He was taken to the Iredell County Jail and placed under a $1,000

A total of 42,290 traffic and criminal citations were issued statewide during this year’s “No Need 2 Speed” campaign, which ran March 25 through 31. 

Law enforcement officers from across the state partnered with the Governor’s Highway Safety Program to increase enforcement in an effort to put a stop to one of the main causes of crashes and fatalities on North Carolina’s roads – speeding.

“Law enforcement’s presence on our roads is imperative to reminding motorists to obey speed limits, and we greatly appreciate their dedication to keeping our roads safe,” said Becky Wallace, director of GHSP.

Officers also issued 3,157 safety belt and 587 child passenger safety violations and 1,111 drug charges.

Report: Woman arrested after punching Belk employee in face, taking watches

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- A Belk employee was punched in the face when he tried to stop a woman from stealing two watches from the store.

The incident was reported on Friday at Northlake Mall around 7:40 p.m., according to the report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Shemika Wildrena Grant, 31, is charged with shoplifting and simple assault, according to police.

Police say Grant took two Armani Exchange watches, concealed them and then tried to leave the store.

When the store employee, who is a loss prevention officer, confronted Grant, she punched him in the face.

Grant was arrested and taken to the Mecklenburg County Jail.

Police: Woman fatally stabs man in domestic dispute

Dawn Bridget Kavanaugh, 42

MOORESVILLE, NC (WBTV)- A Mooresville man died Sunday after police say he was stabbed to death by 42-year-old Dawn Bridget Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh is charged with murder, according to a news release from the Mooresville Police Department.

The incident was reported around 6 p.m. on Sunday along the 100 block of Red Arrow Place.

Officers arrived to find the male victim, later identified as Ronald Everett Ketchum, 43, suffering from a stab wound that stemmed from an apparent domestic dispute, according to the report.

Ketchum was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and then to Carolinas Medical Center where he later died.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police: Swim coach charged after sexual relationship with a student

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV)- A volunteer coach at a high school in Huntersville is scheduled to be in court Friday to face charges he allegedly had an intimate relationship with a student.

Huntersville Police say David Mackenzie Haynes, 24, is charged with three counts of sexual activity with a student and providing a malt beverage to a person less than 21 years of age.

Haynes is the volunteer swim coach at Hopewell High School. Police won't say if the student is on the swim team.

Investigators say CMS Law Enforcement became aware of allegations that Haynes was having sex with the student. They notified Huntersville Police.

Police also said during one of the three encounters, alcohol was provided to the student.

The encounters did not occur on school property or during school sanctioned events.

Haynes is set to be in court on March 8th.

CMPD recruiting for Citizens on Patrol pogram

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is currently recruiting dependable and dedicated citizens for its Citizens on Patrol (C.O.P.) program. 

The C.O.P. program was established as a means of assisting the citizens of Mecklenburg County and the CMPD with community patrols using volunteer members to perform civic services. 

CMPD will be offering training classes for citizens from March 12 to May 31. After graduation, C.O.P. members dedicate a minimum of 16 hours a month of volunteered time to assist police officers and the community.
