Crime

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Police in Charlotte say they have arrested the man who broke into the home of an off-duty detective.

Officers arrested Thomas Powell Tuesday morning. Hours earlier, they say Powell started to break into the detective's house on Belmar Place Road in North Charlotte as his wife called 9-1-1.
Officials said as the wife was calling for help, the detective grabbed his personal weapon, most likely a shotgun, and went to confront the intruder.

The two found each other, the police said the detective shot at the suspect.

At this point, investigators don't believe the person breaking in was hit.

The suspect ran out of the house, and out of the area.  An extensive search turned up nothing.

The husband and wife inside are said to be unhurt.

Crime scene investigators were on scene for hours collecting evidence and talking with potential witnesses.

The officer's name who was involved in the shooting has not been released.
